317 and Candies from Mikulás

  • 317 is a prime number.
  • Prime factorization: 317 is prime.
  • The exponent of prime number 317 is 1. Adding 1 to that exponent we get (1 + 1) = 2. Therefore 317 has exactly 2 factors.
  • Factors of 317: 1, 317
  • Factor pairs: 317 = 1 x 317
  • 317 has no square factors that allow its square root to be simplified. √317 ≈ 17.804

How do we know that 317 is a prime number? If 317 were not a prime number, then it would be divisible by at least one prime number less than or equal to √317 ≈ 17.804. Since 317 cannot be divided evenly by 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, or 17, we know that 317 is a prime number.

Today is Mikulás or St. Nickolas’s name day in Hungary. Children woke up to find various candies such as the candy cane below in their shined shoes this morning.

Here’s a very tricky level 6 puzzle to try.

The logic for this one is complicated. Here is an explanation that may be helpful:

9 is a clue two times in this puzzle. At most one of those 9’s can be 3 x 3. Clue 99 and the other nine will use both 9’s so 72 cannot be 8 x 9 in this puzzle. Here is an explanation of why 72 must be 6 x 12 with the 6 in the first column and the 12 in the top row.

Assuming 6 goes over 72 in top row

Now we can find the rest of the factors easily using logic:

295 and Level 6

  • 295 is a composite number.
  • Prime factorization: 295 = 5 x 59
  • The exponents in the prime factorization are 1 and 1. Adding one to each and multiplying we get (1 + 1)(1 + 1) = 2 x 2 = 4. Therefore 295 has exactly 4 factors.
  • Factors of 295: 1, 5, 59, 295
  • Factor pairs: 295 = 1 x 295 or 5 x 59
  • 295 has no square factors that allow its square root to be simplified. √295 ≈ 17.176

Notes on some logic needed for this puzzle:

  • The choices for 24 are 2 x 12, 3 x 8, or 4 x 6.
  • Because 28 = 4 x 7, 16 = 2 x 8, not 4 x 4. Thus 16 will use one of the 2’s. Either 6 or 8 will use the other 2, so we eliminate  2 x 12 = 24.
  • Also 21 will use one of the 3’s while 6 or 18 will use the other. Thus we eliminate  3 x 8 = 24.
  • Therefore 24 = 4 x 6 or 6 x 4.

267 and Level 6

  • 267 is a composite number.
  • Prime factorization: 267 = 3 x 89
  • The exponents in the prime factorization are 1 and 1. Adding one to each and multiplying we get (1 + 1)(1 + 1) = 2 x 2 = 4. Therefore 267 has 4 factors.
  • Factors of 267: 1, 3, 89, 267
  • Factor pairs: 267 = 1 x 267 or 3 x 89
  • 267 has no square factors that allow its square root to be simplified. √267 ≈ 16.3401
